Facebook's top 10 status trends of 2010 - revealed yesterday - shows us [what we already knew] that Britain loves a good show: The X factor, BB and Celebrity Jucie; The World Cup; and David Cameron.
There are two ways to look at this. The first is to say that the British are a happy and easy-going bunch; they like their entertainment and they like having fun.
The second is less optimistic, and says that the British are fickle folk. Or worse, ignorant - oblivious to the more serious events from around the globe. Case-in-point: the 5th highest global trending topic was the Haiti earthquake disaster; the UK's second highest was Wagner.
If you go with the former, you might say that the British prefer to keep their conversation on significant issues to "real life" - that the online network just isn't the place for it. But that won't wash anymore. Because facebook has already encroached on "real life" - indeed for many, it is real life.
In fairness, British soldiers featured frequently in our status updates. But you can't help but think that this was just a shallow patriotism being strained. The sad truth is that the latter is probably right; maybe not so much an ignorance but more a disregard. As it is, to be a clued up Briton is to know about Cheryl or Cowell or Wagner; those who know of politics or economics ought to seek pastures new - beyond facebok, at least.
