"An ideological imperative"...

Before anything, I must explain the month absence...

A job offer at Kantar Media (London) prompted a chaotic search for somewhere to live - the chaos proved fatal to my blogging exploits. On the plus side, my search was successful, and I started there this week. The people are great and I am looking forward to working with them.

On an equally positive note, my absence meant I avoided looking foolish halfway through the Wayne Rooney saga. With hindsight I can say I never thought he was actually going to go... if you don't buy that, I can certainly say that I wouldn't care much if he did!

The coalition's Spending Review has prompted a more serious reaction in me. As a Labour member I'm bound to criticise it. As a civilian I have no such ties; but in the most prolific public sector cuts for decades, you can't help but be a little concerned. I am certain that it was a political budget: designed by Tories, made for Tories. Alan Johnson got it spot on: "For some members opposite this is their ideological imperative"; an imperative that is comprehensively unfair - shame on the fickle electorate for endorsing it.

Back to something pleasant to finish: congratulations on the triumph of the Chilean Miners rescue effort. I watched throughout the night and saw a great dose of courage and humanity.
