Listen to Soros

After waving goodbye to 2010 with a 0.5% contraction in the economy on our back, Labour leader Ed Miliband has said the coalition's policies are "hurting but not working", urging a change in direction. This we'd expect.

But over in Davos at the World Economic Forum (WEF) there is talk of the same. George Soros, the economic speculator, has urged David Cameron to rethink the government's austerity measures - expecting them to be unsustainable. This is the guy - not that I had any idea - who "broke the bank of England" back in 1992 (Black Wednesday); cunning but shrewd.

Perhaps some advice that doesn't come from across the dispatch box will be able to get through to the coalition; but then again, when they're even ignoring each other, it's best we don't hold our breath.
