To allay fears that this blog has given up on politics in 2011, a quick note on Lord Taylor's expenses trial.
For those that don't know, the former Tory peer was caught out after he claimed for travel costs between an Oxford property and the Houses of Parliament - despite living in London at the time. I probably shouldn't be petty here and say that expense scandals are a Tory thing - eh, David Chaytor - so instead the finger will point across the board; come on, members, let's start behaving now.
But that wasn't the only Oxfordshire home in the news; over Christmas, David Cameron met with James Murdoch (son of Rupert) for dinner at the [Oxford] home of Rebekah Brooks, News International chief exec. This has raised big questions over whether Jeremy Hunt (or whatever Marr likes to call him these days) will be able to act independently when deciding whether to refer News Corp's bid (to buy the rest of BSkyB) to the Competition Commission. Hmm... no prizes for guessing the answer to those questions then.
Seems Oxford is trying to tell us something: politics is a naughty little game
